Chapter Six

Lucent and I walked into my family dining room the next morning hand in hand. We were late, but I wasn’t sorry. I’d needed to feel Lucent inside me a few more times before he left.

To my relief, the parental unit wasn’t in the dining room. Before I could ask where they were, Caleb said, “Your parents have taken their breakfast in their suite.”

That was good. I could talk freely with my mates. Not that I couldn’t with the PU in the room, but some things me and the guys had to deal with I didn’t want them involved in. Plus, Lucent’s mission was personal, and I didn’t need my mother going all Alpha protector when we didn’t know enough facts about Jerick.

I took a seat next to Karn, and Lucent sat on my other side. Zelphar’s gaze burned into me. He’d watched Lucent and me come into the room, and I hadn’t returned his stare yet. When I finally glanced at him, I noted there were no emotions in his features. I couldn’t tell if he was jealous. If he was, then he’d have to get over it.

Karn leaned into me and kissed my cheek. “Morning.”

“Morning,” I said and kissed him on the lips, then made eye contact with Zelphar. One corner of his lips twitched. It was so slight, if I’d blinked, I would have missed it. I rolled my eyes at him.

“I’ll be leaving right after breakfast,” Lucent announced.

Zelphar jerked his gaze to Lucent. “You can’t leave her now.”

“I have something I need to take care of. We talked about this already.” Lucent nodded at Caleb. “I’ll need your help.”

Caleb frowned. “It can’t wait a few weeks?”

I gave Lucent a pointed look to stop being so cryptic. “Lucent has a personal, family thing to take care of.”

Zelphar crossed his arms. “And you’re taking Caleb with you? Not happening. In case you haven’t noticed, we have a ghost issue that takes priority over everything right now.”

I was the first to respond, “I told him to go.”

Lucent draped his arm over the back of the chair and massaged my neck. “If I don’t research why my father died owing a debt to a mage, my little problem will be all of ours.”

“What do you mean?” Zelphar asked.

Lucent told them the story. “Jerick made it clear the last time he was here, he was interested in Ember. I know for a fact, the SOB will use her to collect on the debt.”

“Jerick has been on the mage most wanted list for decades,” Caleb spoke up for the first time since Lucent and I entered the dining room. “The opportunity to take him down is too good to pass up, so count me in.” Then he looked at Zelphar and said, “You, Karn, and Ember can handle a ghost. Plus, you have the enforcers backing you and Hera in your back pocket.”

Zelphar growled and curled his lip at the sound of his stepmother’s name. I held up my hand to him.
